This follows the growing popularity of Udhayam, the recently re-launched e-zine that is sent free to subscribers via e-mail.

Mumbai. Mahuaa Media Private Limited (MMPL), an associate of entertainment and media company Century Communication Group, has launched a Bhojpuri channel Mahuaa TV today. The 24-hour general entertainment channel Bhojpuri channel is the first of its kind in India.

The channel was formally unveiled on 9 August by railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, who noted it was “heartening to see someone finally coming out with a channel that reminds one of his roots.”

“Bhojpuri is such a sweet language. Unfortunately, in today’s times, where speaking in English has become an in-thing, cultures and languages like Bhojpuri have become the butt of jokes,” he rued at the launch.

MMPL claims to be spending close to Rs 750 million for the channel. “We have spent more then Rs 500 million for movie acquisition, serial production and setup. Rs 100 million are splurged on promoting only. Our total investment is around Rs 700-750 million,” MMPL chairman and MD PK Tewari told Indiantelevision.com.

Mainly targetted at Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttaranchal, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi and NCR, it has launched its advertising campaign across these markets.

Tewari said, “Our channel will serve up to 200 million Bhojpuri-speaking viewers, who do not have any other Bhojpuri language channel. Within six to eight months, we are also planning to launch Bhojpuri news, Bhojpuri music and Bhojpuri films channel.”

For distribution and placement, the company has tied up with Set Pro, a Network18 company.

Mahuaa TV has launched with 10 hours of programming which includes five half-hour news segments, six daily soaps, two weekly shows and a movie on weekdays and weekends.

The channel is betting high on its flagship fiction-based show Bahubali, for which it has roped in director Prakash Jha to produce the show. Among other shows are soaps such as Chotki Dulhan, Sato Vachanva Nibhaib Sajna and Baliaa Kranti 1942.

Mahuaa TV also claims of a lineup of blockbuster Bhojpuri movies starring popular actors, Ravi Kissen and Manoj Tiwari. The channel has reserved the 1.30 pm slot on weekdays and 7.30 pm on weekends for movies.

“We have acquired the satellite telecast rights of around 200 movies, and are also planning to produce close to 15 movies per year as well,” Tewari added.

The channel claims that it will soon launch more daily soaps, food travelogue, religious discourses, morning shows, astro- predictions and news to its audiences.

The Bhojpuri turf is seeing interest from broadcasters. Mahuaa TV’s launch follows Music India’s 24-hour music entertainment channel Sangeet Bhojpuri, to cater to Bhojpuri-speaking audiences. Broadcasters like Sri Adhikari Brothers, Sahara One Media and Entertainment are joining the bandwagon of Bhojpuri channels in different genres.

On the question if market will sustain these many players, Tewari said, “As a first mover, Mahuaa TV will enjoy the advantages like advertising revenues and a stronger brand image. Moreover, there will not be too many movies left for other channels.”

VIENNA: Imagine European audiences spending an entire month tapping their feet to Indian dance and music! That’s exactly what happened at a festival here, as Indian artistes gave a glimpse of folk, traditional and even Bollywood art.

The occasion was the silver anniversary of Impuls Tanz, Vienna’s international festival of contemporary dance where performances run parallel to workshops in a month-long celebration of every move that the human body is capable of making. The festival opened in July with songs by the nomadic Manganiyar musicians of Rajasthan, including children, who live in the Thar desert.

The Manganiyar musicians mesmerised thousands at a midsummer night open air performance held against the background of a full moon and on the sprawling premises of Vienna’s Museum Quarter. Called Manganiyar Seduction, the ensemble of mostly Muslim musicians, often singing in praise of Hindu gods before a predominantly European audience, was a sell-out. Visually, the show was enchanting for its gigantic Moulin Rouge-cum-castle in the air kind of look.

Conceived by Roysten Abel, the Kerala-born alumnus of Delhi’s National School of Drama, 42 musicians were perched in a row in nine different jharokhas (window friezes) framed by blinking light bulbs, laced with red curtains and arranged in four rows to resemble a sheet of music.

The inner courtyard of the 60,000-sq-m contemporary arts complex was packed with thousands of people, most of whom remained standing or swayed to the energetic two-hour performance. “I am overwhelmed,” Titus Leber, Austrian multimedia writer and film director said.

Fitness guru and Bollywood dance composer Terence Lewis was invited by ImPuls Tanz to conduct workshops here. He taught 40 European students to dance to the tune of “Taal se taal mila” from “Taal”, Subhash Ghai’s romantic musical from 1999. But Lewis stayed back for another week to take lessons from contemporary dance gurus like Joe Alegado of the US and Rasmus Oelme of Sweden.

Lewis, also known as Shiva, learnt to dance like a tiger from American choreographer Joe Alegado whose body movement techniques help to bring out the animal in us and affirm man’s relationship with the earth. “It is crazy, animalistic stuff but very contemporary,” lanky Lewis said.

Martin Kaempchen, the Tagore scholar from Santiniketan, was touring Europe with three singers and dancers from the Santhal tribe. Part of this group was Sanyasi Lohar who sang Baul music and played on the one-stringed instrument called Ektara at an evening hosted by the Austro-Indian society.

Shovana Narayan performed Kathak to the music of Franz Schubert, one of Austria’s greatest composers from the 18th century, at this year’s summer festival in this country’s beautiful lake district. Dressed in a midnight blue and gold lehnga, the diva left a packed auditorium breathless when she mimed to Schubert’s Winter Journey Songs, a series of poems about nostalgia, the painful present and uncertain future.

Famous cellist Yvonne Timoianu and pianist Alexander Preda interpreted Schubert’s pensive music to which Narayan’s dance added Asian sensibility. Narayan discovered the musician in 1986 when she first danced to Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden”. “Schubert evokes a range of bitter sweet emotions. I feel very close to his music,” an inspired Narayan said.

The access is available for free at www.guruji.com/music and will offer a wide variety of Malayalam music.

Guruji.com was started by two young entrepreneurs Anurag Dod and Gaurav Mishra, both IIT graduates, in October 2006 in Bangalore. It is the first crawler based search engine developed completely in India, designed to make the search simple, claim the entrepreneurs.

“God’s own country has a rich and varied cultural heritage and the influence of music on Malayalees is tremendous. We believe this service will appeal to everyone, in India and outside,” said Anurag Dod.

She is sexy, beautiful and graceful. Actress Bipasha Basu has been in the spotlight recently for her role in the upcoming film Shob Charitro Kalponik (directed by Rituparno Ghosh). The theme is riveting. Says Filmfare magazine, “How much does art owe to life and vice versa? Can life truly be depicted in art? Is life as complex as art? These are some of the questions Bipasha Basu’s debut Bengali film attempts to answer.”

Shob Charitro Kalponik follows the inner world of a woman. The plot revolves around a discordant couple: Manisha (played by Bipasha) and Indranil (Prosenjit). Tired of the daily squabbles, Manisha is attracted to Shekhar. Life falls apart for Manisha when her husband dies suddenly. Forced to complete Indranil’s unfinished work, she begins to see her husband in a new light.

Believe it or not, had Bipasha not ventured into the film world, she would have ended up as a doctor. After passing out in the course of her dissection class, which was opening up a rat’s innards, she switched from science to the commerce stream. Later, she acquired a degree in commerce. Her initial plan was to be a chartered accountant but fate led her in a radically different direction. At age 17, she ended up being the Ford Supermodel of the World. After this triumph, she was crowned Miss Vivacious, sponsored by Tulips.

Born on January 7, 1979 in New Delhi, the Basu family moved to Calcutta. Unbelievably in her younger years, her dark complexion earned her the sobriquet of ‘ugly’. Strangely enough, her name means ‘dark deep desire.’

Bipasha has bagged many an award for her histrionic skills. Over the last few years, there has been many a landmark in her young years — the 2007 nomination for Star Screen Award as Best Actress for Corporate and she has received the Bollywood Movie Award Best Actress for Corporate, among others.

Bipasha is quoted in Stardust magazine, July 2006 as saying, “In Corporate my character is tough but at home she is simple and vulnerable. The balance is the essence of the woman, which I think has come out beautifully in the film. I hope every career-orient Ed woman will relate to her.”

In a meet-the-press programme at the Trissur Press Club on Wednesday, Tamil film director Bharathi Raja, considered the godfather of modern Tamil cinema for inspiring a generation of young artists to take up movies as a career, commented that Tamil cinema is fast losing its identity.

He said that contemporary Tamil cinema concerns itself with exploiting the latest technology rather than improving content. “Films that portray social realities are no longer being made. I cannot understand why a regional film should be made at Rs. 100 crore. Actors hike their fees frequently for no reason. Some members of the film industry are out there to make a fast buck. No one is concerned about commitment to the medium or artistic integrity,” a national newspaper reported.

He said that a good film is often the outcome of a combination of directorial skills and writer’s vision. “Everyone wants to be a director these days. No one takes pains to be a writer. Only when a talented director and writer work together, a good film is made.”

He referred to a few Malayalam and Bengali films that had a rare quality to touch the soul. “I have always attempted to make such films. For the past 20 years, I have been thinking of directing a Malayalam film. I may do it any day,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Bharathan Award, instituted by the Bharathan Foundation, was presented to director Bharathi Raja for outstanding contribution to cinema at a function held on the 10th death anniversary of director Bharathan. Film directors Kamal, Venu B. Nair and Jayaraj handed over the award in the presence of K.P.A.C. Lalitha and Kavalam Narayana Panicker. Bharathan’s son Sidharth was also present on the occasion.

NEW DELHI: Director Anjan Dutta, whose Chalo Let’s go was screened at the 10th OSIAN’s-Cinefan Festival, believes in making films that help in a re-discovery of the Bengali ethos.

Dutta believes that these ethos appear to have been lost in the metro culture.

Addressing a press meet at the recent Tenth OSIAN’s, he said that his attempt was to reach Bengali audiences all over the country and convey the message that Bangla cinema had not come to an end after Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen and others who came soon after.

Certain inhibitions had prevented serious cinema from progressing and the picture of a changing Bengal was somehow missing, he added.

Asked why he had used an English word for a title of a Bangla film, he said it was meant to be a pun, and also because it would appeal to the present.

Chalo lets go is a hilarious road movie featuring four heroes on a crazy, rambling journey in the picturesque North Bengal . Filmed in Calcutta and Darjeeling , it is a roller coaster journey comprising nine tourists and one hitchhiker.
